Alterations of dress for mobility
Corrupt and calculating is Mrs. Mayor, as she takes advantage of the town’s distress as an opportunity to quench her thirst for political control.
As routine, the primary criteria was to make her recognizable from the Nickelodeon show (pictured on the right). Her cartoon sports a prim red jacket and purple pencil skirt/blouse set, topped with a string of pearls and a mayor sash. We were lucky to find a similar scarlet blazer in our inventory, as well as a tight purple dress and necklace.
To allow for full range of motion while dancing, we stitched red fabric inserts into the side seams of the skirt which opened its form-fitting shape. We then removed the blazer’s black circular buttons, replaced them with plastic buttons, and glued bottlecaps on top. This connected Mrs. Mayor to the trash motif of our show, and made the outfit look more jumbled and fun. Finally, I constructed a pineapple shaped pin to attach to the lapel of her blazer. The bright yellow stands out against the reds and purples, and communicates her authoritative position like a badge.
